Best places to eat in Stowe, VT

For a small town, Stowe has a multitude of places to eat and is a foodie’s paradise. We usually stay in Stowe for around 5-7 days and each year there’s a lengthy debate about where to go. Do we go back to classic favourites like Harrisons or try somewhere new in the knowledge that it’s likely to be another culinary find but it takes the place of somewhere we love. Decisions decisions.

Here’s our top 8…

8. The Skinny Pancake – We went here for the first time this year. It opened last year but only at the weekend so we never got the chance to go. It’s right next to the ice rink and serves the best selection of sweet and savoury crepes as well as a great selection of beers.

7. Café on Main – One of those places that doesn’t look much from the outside but does the best sandwiches and breakfasts for a reasonable price. Try the BLT. You’ll thank me.
6. Piecasso – Oh the pizza at Piecasso. Toppings for days. All served on some of the best bases we’ve eaten and that’s saying something. Again, a good price for a great meal. On the Mountain road but not far from Stowe village, good one for the way home from a hard day’s skiing.
5. Doc Ponds – We tried Doc Ponds for the first time this year after seeing it several times on Tripadvisor and it didn’t disappoint. The atmosphere is relaxed and noisy without being too loud, the staff are knowledgeable, friendly and a bit cool. The taco’s were outstanding, and we’ve eaten in some incredible Mexican restaurants and these were right up there. As was the mac and cheese. Good selection of craft ales and cocktails.
4. The Bench – Describes itself as Vermont Comfort Food and honestly I’m not just being lazy here but I can’t think of another way to describe it. Ask to sit in the main restaurant of The Bench, to the right as you go in, it’s much cosier in here in Winter and has a much better feel to it. They don’t take reservations and sometimes the wait is long, but it’s worth it. I tried a pizza here for the first time this year because we didn’t go to Piecasso and it was fantastic, straight out of the huge wood fired pizza oven.
3. Ideltyme – My top three from here on out are pretty much interchangeable and we debated this for a while. The cheese fritters at Idletyme are something I dream about. Regularly. They suggest you share them. We did one year. We never have again.
Idletyme brew their own ale, it’s worth getting the beer flight so you can sample their best and choose your favourite from there on. The staff are really friendly and remember us each year which I love. The burger alone is worth the visit, go on an empty stomach though!

2. PlatePlate is in the heart of Stowe Village and opened in 2013. It combines Californian flavours with Vermont ingredients and offers clever, tasty, well thought out food in a modern and relaxed setting. Reserve a seat at the chef’s counter and try the cheese soufflé, it’s one of the best I’ve had.
1. Harrison’s – I could rave about Harrison’s all day. In fact, some friends of ours stopped in Stowe on their way up to Canada recently and when they asked where they should eat I immediately though of Harrison’s which is why it got the coveted number one spot. We’ve never had a bad meal in Harrison’s and I can’t imagine that ever changing. The food is exceptional and the service wonderful. In fact, one year we felt quite rushed and we made that comment in Tripadvisor, we were invited back by the owners and received a complimentary dessert which was unnecessary but lovely. It’s on the special’s menu but we’ve been fortunate enough to get the raspberry pie two years in a row now. Get it, even if you don’t like raspberries. Or pie. Get it. They even put some aside for us when we sat down to order and remembered how much we’d loved it from the year before.

I think it’s hard to find a bad meal in Stowe, they take their food seriously without the pretense. Ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible, the local beer scene is taken very seriously (try Alchemist if you have time) and the service from the staff is outstanding.
